Building the observatory
One of the main reasons for choosing this property was to have an observatory. The best spot was the site of a small glass building. This was surrounded by shrubs and covered by an overgrown clematis.
The plants and fencing were cleared and a concrete base laid.
The building was a timber construction, with a flat roof and a purchased rotating dome. Inside there were two areas: a cold room which would have a concrete pillar to support the telescope and a ‘warm room’ for equipment and for sitting in whilst observing.
We were able to create the building, adding insulation and cladding. We had help in lifting the roof panels and had somebody to cover the roof with a proper waterproof membrane.
Adjacent to the observatory was a decking area and the garden was designed around these features.
